My Teen Daughter Wants Dermal Filler- Now What?

The world seems radically different from when we grew up; it even seems radically different from five years ago! Social media has changed our society indefinitely (for better and for worse). Social media has made our kids maybe a little too self conscious at times, but it has also taught them lessons and expanded their horizons.

One thing we all have learned about via social media is plastic surgery and injectables. We have learned about the pros and cons, what to look for in our injectors and what to avoid. Also, via social media we all saw Kylie Jenner at a very young age have far too much filler injected, only to have what is now known as “pillow face” some years later. Due to this, it can be shocking for a lot of parents when their teens and 20 somethings want dermal filler.

If a child is under the age of 18, they may only have aesthetic changes done if their parent or guardian is present and consents for them. A lot of parents consent and support their teens of appropriate age for them to have rhinoplasties (a nose surgery that can correct functional issues as well as cosmetic appearance) but somehow it does still feel uneasy when your teen asks about dermal filler. Similarly to rhinoplasty surgery, dermal filler should only be injected when a teen is of appropriate age and examined by a professional doctor to determine if they are in fact ready for the dermal filler – typically this will be 17/18, not younger.

As a teen, their bodies and facial features are still changing so it is imperative they wait until they are ready. However, a lot of teens are asking for dermal filler for college graduation gifts – what then? They’re old enough to have the filler injected by their own consent, but what should a parent do if they ask permission or ask for you to pay for it for them? That answer, unfortunately, only the parent can decide, but our advice is to ensure the teen is educated about everything in regards to receiving dermal filler. We advise that you join your appropriately aged teen for their injectable consultation- it may be less intimidating with you present. Also assist your appropriately aged teen in finding the best plastic surgery clinic to ensure they’re going to be in safe, excellent hands.

While there is a risk with any treatment or procedure (there are even risks associated with facials), when injected properly by a licensed medical professional, dermal filler can be almost undetectable and just a subtle aesthetic change. We cannot tell you how to feel about your teen exploring dermal fillers or how to behave when they choose to go forward with the treatment, but if you do choose to support their dermal filler journey we do recommend that you help them make the right choice aesthetically and with the right injector.
