IPL
IN CHICAGO, IL

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a treatment used to help  reduce some skin problems on face and neck like hyperpigmentation and brown spots from sun damage and photoaging. Results are usually almost immediate and visible.

IPL Laser treatment sends strong pulses of light into the skin. This impacts the deep tissue areas of the skin where the damage is. There are different types of IPL treatments that target and repair different kinds of damages: the specific laser for you will be discussed and used during your meeting with Dr. Shah.

There is no downtime for this treatment! The results are usually visible after one to three treatments depending on your skin condition.

These lasers are usually used to remove sun spots, age spots, and brown blotches on the face, neck, chest, hands and other areas of the body. They are used for lightening and reducing redness, rosacea, dilated blood vessels and “broken” blood vessels on the face, neck, and chest too. It also helps to control flushing and improves skin texture by stimulating collagen production, improving pore size by temporarily reducing oiliness.

lentigines

Lentigines, also known as age spots, are typically flat and brown. As we age, brown spots increase. They can be particularly concerning when present on the face and hands. Lentigines are not all the same. Some lentigines respond well to IPL, while others need deeper penetration. Newer IPL’s offer improvement in targeting browns. Ablative treatments, including erbium and fractionated C02 can be of help in combination or as standalones to treat lentigines.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is IPL and how does it work?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, a non-invasive cosmetic treatment that uses high-intensity pulses of light to target and treat various skin concerns, such as sun damage, age spots, and redness. It works by delivering controlled light energy to the skin, which is absorbed by pigments in the skin, leading to a reduction in pigmentation and overall skin rejuvenation.

Is IPL suitable for all skin types and colors?

IPL can be used on a wide range of skin types and colors, but its effectiveness may vary. The ideal candidate for IPL should have fair to light-brown skin with good contrast between their skin tone and the pigmentation they want to target. It is essential to consult with a qualified practitioner to determine if IPL is suitable for your specific skin type.

What skin concerns can IPL treat?

IPL is commonly used to address a variety of skin issues, including sunspots, age spots, redness, broken blood vessels, rosacea, freckles, and uneven skin texture. It can also help with hair reduction and stimulate collagen production, improving overall skin tone and texture.

What should I expect during an IPL treatment session?

During an IPL session, a handheld device is used to deliver controlled pulses of light to the treatment area. You may feel a warm, snapping sensation, and some patients describe it as mildly uncomfortable. The procedure typically lasts around 20-30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

How many IPL sessions are typically required?

The number of IPL sessions needed varies depending on the specific skin concern being addressed and the individual’s skin type. In many cases, a series of 3-6 treatments, spaced a few weeks apart, is recommended for optimal results. Your skincare specialist will create a customized treatment plan for your needs.

Is there any downtime or recovery after an IPL treatment?

IPL is considered a no-downtime procedure, meaning you can return to your regular activities immediately. However, you may experience some redness, mild swelling, or darkening of pigmented areas for a few days following the treatment. It’s crucial to protect your skin from the sun and follow post-treatment care instructions.

Are there any potential side effects or risks associated with IPL?

While IPL is generally safe, potential side effects can include temporary redness, swelling, darkening or lightening of the skin, and in rare cases, blistering or scarring. These side effects are usually temporary and can be minimized by following proper aftercare.

Is IPL safe for the face and other body areas?

IPL is commonly used on the face, neck, chest, hands, and other body areas. It’s versatile and effective in treating a variety of skin issues on different parts of the body.

What can I do to maintain the results of IPL treatments?

Protect your skin from excessive sun exposure, use sunscreen regularly, and follow a proper skincare regimen as recommended by your provider. Periodic maintenance sessions may also be advised to extend the results of your IPL treatments.
