The One Secret to Skin Reverse Aging May Be Here

We all know by now the biggest danger to our skin’s health and our skin’s appearance is the sun. As we age or even prematurely age, with the help of that great big ball in the sky, the type I collagen bundles which live in our dermis just under the top layer of our skin that provide strength, and support to our skin becomes fragmented and weak. When that collagen I layer becomes weak it leads to wrinkles, loss of density, loss of elasticity and the dreaded skin droop.

The easiest way to prevent this damage to our precious I collage by sunlight is, of course, to wear sunscreen as much as possible and reapply frequently. With that said, passages from a new study published in Experimental Dermatology suggest that injections of the most frequently used type of dermal filler, cross-linked hyaluronic acid, into photoaged skin could reverse the dermal changes associated with photoaging.

The fillers with hyaluronic acid which are injected into the skin to reduce lines and wrinkles and create fullness. These same fillers in this study are thought to stimulate collagen production within several weeks of injection, and thought to be long-lasting actually stimulating collagen accumulation over the course of a year.  These results allude to how the hyaluronic acid based filler improves the appearance of skin in the short term  but because the newly formed dermal collagen lasts many years, the findings also provide insight into how the filler can promote long-term clinical improvement, months or even a year after injection.

These findings were studied by Frank Wang, MD, the William B. Taylor Endowed Professor of Clinical Dermatology at U-M Medical School. “A single injection of cross-linked hyaluronic acid dermal filler can lead to rapid and long-lasting improvement of skin by stimulating collagen deposition, and furthermore, repeat injections may add more collagen, eventually reducing the need for re-treatment,” stated Dr. Frank Wang.
